The Altered Scale is one of the most commonly used scales in jazz and it comes from the Melodic Minor Scale. I’m still trying to get more and more acquainted with Melodic Minor every day. In this lick, I’m using the G Altered Scale taken from Ab Melodic Minor to create tension and use “outside” tones over the V7 chord or the G7 chord for this example. If you are interested in another “Altered” idea please check out Lesson 12: An Altered V7 Idea In All 12 Keys. I couldn’t help but borrow some ideas from Kurt Rosenwinkel for this one. Being an individual and finding your own voice is not an easy task, but it is extremely important in the world of improvisational music so please be patient and try your best to come up with your own ideas. I hope you enjoy this lesson inspired by the one and only Kurt Rosenwinkel.
