This is a very interesting and challenging phrase in groups of five. I took this phrase from Kurt’s composition Minor Blues from the album The Next Step. The phrase begins at 2:17. I’ve also included two other musical examples that I hope can shed some light on what Kurt was thinking about when coming up with this idea. I hope this lesson can inspire you to not only learn this very cool phrase but also to try and create something of your own. Learning a lick from someone is a great way to get your feet wet in the world of improvisation, but the goal is to be as original as possible. I love Kurt Rosenwinkel, but I am not him. Simply learning this phrase and playing it at your next gig is fine, but I’m hopefully going to be able to give you some motivation to learn the theory behind this idea.
